Voice identity verification has a number of advantages. The cost of implementation is low because there is no special hardware required. A simple telephone or microphone is all that is needed to verify an individual's identity using their voice. Other methods of biometric identity verification, such as fingerprinting and retinal scans, require special devices.

Voice identity verification is easy to use and easily accepted by individuals. It is quite natural to speak. It is not as natural to put an eye up to a reader. The concept of identifying individuals by voice is also quite natural. Every time someone answers a telephone call, the natural instinct is to try to identify the caller by their voice.

Perhaps most important to the future of voice identity verification is that it is the only biometric that allows an individual's identity to be verified remotely. For example, allowing a user to call a phone number and verify their identity with their bank vocally before performing a transaction is much easier than asking the individual to go to the bank in person and verify their identity via fingerprint.

Enrolling an individual in a voice identity verification system is a quick process. The individual is asked to speak a certain set of words or phrases. From that sample, a digital representation of their voice, called a base voiceprint, is created. A good voiceprint requires between 2-8 seconds of speech.

Verifying the identity of an individual is accomplished by comparing the base voiceprint that was created at enrollment to a sample voiceprint given when the individual needs to have their identity verified. Verifying the identity of an individual is very fast; it can be completed in 0.5 seconds.
